Aaron Outhwaite

Aaron Outhwaite is currently pursuing his PhD in the Department of Process Engineering and Applied Science (PEAS) at Dalhousie University in Halifax NS, Canada, where his research focus is Additive Manufacturing, Bioprocess Engineering, and Biopolymers. Specifically, Aaron is working on developing bacterial biopolymers for use in the fabrication of engineering living materials for large-scale 3D printing of building materials. Aaron is also developing process strategies and machine systems that can use biopolymers from seaweed and biomass instead of plastics for desktop 3D printing systems.

Aaron has worked extensively with developing bioprocess systems for the production of bacteria and microalgae-grown biopolymers and is currently developing an open-source bioreactor system for bioprospecting new bacterial strains in the field. Aaron has extensive experience in biosystems design and engineering, including bioreactor modeling, design and control, microalgae and bacteria culture maintenance, laboratory procedures and SOP, and biomaterial testing and analytics.
